Our bushes and trees are thriving with all of the extra rain, producing more fruit than I have ever seen.. In the late afternoons I often find myself sitting on the garden bench ,knitting and enjoying the solitude of a summer day that is starting to cool off.

Getting out into nature can be as easy as sitting in your own backyard or patio. Listening to the sounds of nature, the birds, the bees, the leaves on the trees as they sway in the breeze is soothing. Gazing up at the sky and into the clouds to watch them float away can kindle the imagination. For myself, knitting outside can be very meditative. If the pattern is simple enough, it allow you to repeat a mantra while knitting. I sometimes include a different mantras with each row that I knit. It helps me to focus on the moment and take me out of the every day. Summer gives us an excuse to take the time to relax and enjoy, even for just a short time.

Soul Travelerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11383146884931121418noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2064679394217469834.post-57985123859960269852023-07-25T11:20:00.002-07:002023-07-25T11:20:32.961-07:00If The Hat Fits, Use It!
This seems to be the summer of dish cloth mania for me. I started out with simply cotton cloths and before I knew it I am onto scrubby cloths. At this point I am still in the process of making a few to put in the shop that of course have to be in the shape of a Witch Hat because it's a witch thing and because I need some kind of amusement to keep myself motivated to clean. Here is hoping that others are motivated by the collection I will have coming out soon. here is a sample of a few...

Soul Travelerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11383146884931121418noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2064679394217469834.post-82792637171763536512023-07-16T12:00:00.000-07:002023-07-16T12:00:00.145-07:00Joys of Summer
Admittedly, Summer is my least favorite season because of the intense heat that keeps me from doing as many outdoor activities as I would like. However there are so many fun things about Summer, not the least of which is eating the home grown crops and herbs that are growing throughout the season. One of my favorite things to do is to add fresh herbs like mint, lemon verbena or lemon thyme to my iced tea. I make a pitcher of green iced tea and add the herbs letting them brew in the hot water along with the green tea. So far, lemon verbena is my favorite because of the strong flavor of lemon you get from just a few leaves. I also enjoy adding a bit of mint to green tea which gives it a hint of mint flavor. I have been working on making dish clothes for a local charity here called Knitting 4 Peace. Pictured is one of those cloths. Because dishcloths are small, they are very portable as a take along knitting project for long car rides or sitting in a park enjoying the beauty of the day. Just as long as you don't knit while you drive you should be ok 😂

Soul Travelerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11383146884931121418noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2064679394217469834.post-52135211318862357712023-07-15T12:00:00.001-07:002023-07-15T12:00:00.143-07:00And So It Grows...
Once again we have signed up to garden in our local community garden. This year we branched out and added a second plot. The main reason was so that we could dedicate a plot to my mini pumpkins, gourds and lemon cucumbers which seem to take over the garden every year. We added corn to the plot as well which should make for a good mix. In the larger plot we planted beets, radishes, kale, beets, tomatoes, tomatillos, squash, carrots and of course zuchs..We have had a very rainy couple of months which was actually great for our cooler weather crops so last week we went down and harvested the radishes and some of the kale so i could make some healthy kale chips for us to snack on. Baked kale chips are really the only way I like to eat kale. My husband took care to remove the tough stems from each of the kale leaves which made them extra crispy and light. I chose a very simple recipe and they turned out great. I placed them single layer on a cookie sheet and brushed each leaf with a tiny bit of olive oil and then topped them with garlic powder and slat. I placed them in a 300 degree oven and baked each batch for about 16 to 17 minutes. I used the convection bake setting on my oven. If you use a conventional oven it just might take a few minutes longer, but I would still check them at 16 minutes because they could burn easily. Since they are feather light without the stems, they won't hold up in a dip but they do rehydrate nicely if you want to sprinkle them onto a bowl of soup! Our radishes will be great in our salads and they are also wonderful when very thinly sliced and sauteed in butter. Below is a picture of the garden plots as of early July. Here in Colorado we get a slow start on the growing season!

.

Soul Travelerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11383146884931121418noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2064679394217469834.post-9822662699662805622023-07-14T12:00:00.036-07:002023-07-14T12:00:00.163-07:00Homemade Yum!
It's been a rather hot week here so far and so naturally I wanted to make something simple and light for dinner. Tonight's dinner was salad made with lettuce, our tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, Greek olives and feta cheese topped with tuna. Since this all sounded too healthy to me, I decided to add some rich and delicious cornbread. 😃

There is a place in Estes Park Colorado called The Baldpate Inn. Everyday during the season they cook up a soup and salad buffets style lunch that includes a few daily breads and some out of this world homemade pies for dessert, if you have any room left! One of the breads they serve is this cornbread pictured below. It has been a favorite of ours for years and it is always a hit with guests.

Shortly after taking the cornbread out of the oven today,, I walked past the counter where it had cooled and I could actually smell the butter! I could not let the moment pass me by, so I grabbed a piece to have as an "appetizer". I have included the link to the recipe below in case someone wants to check it out. One thing that is different between the link recipe and my little Baldpate Inn Cookbook is that in my recipe it calls for 16oz of creamed corn, not 2 cans. I just used the one can of creamed corn which is 14.5 oz which is close enough. Also both recipes say to bake it for one hour. I set my timer for 40 minutes and it was done. Since everyone's oven works a bit differently, I always recommend setting the timer to less time on any baking recipes. You can always add time but once it's dry there is not much you can do. This recipe is easy and forgiving. .These squares freeze well too.. I wrap each piece in plastic wrap and then place them in a freezer bag so I can take out however many I want the next time I want to serve them. They are my go to when I make Chili in the Fall and Winter.

https://www.food.com/recipe/the-baldpate-inn-cornbread-207470
Soul Travelerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11383146884931121418noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2064679394217469834.post-39936390029606274012023-07-13T12:00:00.019-07:002023-07-13T12:00:00.139-07:00Can We Talk Tarot?
I love to live fully in each season of the year and I like to include this my tarot practice which is actually how I got my Etsy store idea. I like to use tarot cloths that either reflect each season or compliment the deck I am currently using. This is why you will see tarot cloths in my shop that include seasonal themes.

When it comes to my Summer tarot readings, I like to include The Herbal Tarot as one of my decks. The illustrations are beautiful and the colors just scream summer to me.

I also enjoy changing up my oracle decks seasonally. I like to use them for a daily bit of wisdom before I begin doing my readings. A summer favorite of mine is The Green Witch Oracle Deck. The illustrations are simple and beautiful. What fun is it to get a bit of wisdom from beetroot after all!

Finally, I have a new favorite tarot deck that I found that combines my love of knitting with tarot. It is called The Yarn Tarot! It has a very modern and fun look to it with more subtle colors and fairly simple designs that I really enjoy. I think this deck is a must have for any crafty crafter! I have a nice collection of tarot decks but of course, I don't use all of them for readings since I don't connect with all of them as a tool but I can still enjoy them as little works of art, which of course they are.

Soul Travelerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11383146884931121418noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2064679394217469834.post-43333604046575856312023-07-12T19:11:00.000-07:002023-07-12T19:11:02.899-07:00It's a Barbie Summer
With all that seems to be going on these days, I like to dip in the pool of childhood nostalgia and Barbie, is for me, a delightful diversion. Today's Mattel has a plethora of Barbies doing many wonderful things (career wise) One of my favorites is Bee Keeper Barbie. A friend of mine is a Bee Keeper so I gifted her one for the holidays one year. There are also many Barbies that commemorate famous women from Eleanor Roosevelt to Jane Goodall. For me it's all about my childhood Barbie so in the Summer of Barbie I decided to make myself some mug rugs and a dishtowel from some awesome fabric that I purchased on Etsy. I still have some other Barbie items in mind to make, but this is a start.

Soul Travelerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11383146884931121418noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2064679394217469834.post-77910988117667359022023-07-07T11:43:00.001-07:002023-07-07T11:43:41.769-07:00Nothing Says Don't Mess With Me like Hemlock
This kitchen towel was meant for display in your witchy kitchen. My beautiful Luna cat died of cancer a year ago this month. Hoping that there would be a miracle recovery and pouring energy into keeping her going, silenced my writing voice. She went from healthy cat to sick overnight. She was 14 but I thought (or hoped) that she would live until 20. She was my last cat from California, a place we lived for over twelve years. A place where I got engaged, married and finished my college degree. The place where I got my first ever cat, Muffin. California will always have such a large place in my heart because of these life events. A year later, I still mourn the loss of my Luna. In early November we had a pipe break in the kitchen which resulted in a minor flood and quite a bit of repairs including our finished basement where my shop Toadwerks resides. Fortunately, the damage was in the ceiling and the rug and I lost very little of my crafting materials. The work on the house was finally finished in late February just in time for THE PANDEMIC! LOL
The pandemic was at first, surreal, then scary and now it is the new reality. At least for now. For a crafty witch such as I , it has been a good time to actually get some of the many unfinished craft projects I have. Once the craft space was put back in order and thoroughly organized, I was ready to craft! Business has been good during the pandemic so I have been kept busy, for which I am grateful. I am also grateful that our family and friends have been healthy. I am also grateful for our five fabulous kitties! In September we adopted twin black kittens who were just 10 weeks old. Sabrina and Pirate are the most mellow kittens we have ever had.

As we all settle into our new reality, let's embrace the positives of this situation. Being able to spend more time crafting, an ability to save a little money now that we aren't going out to socialize. eating healthier because we are cooking and baking. The greatest "gift" of this pandemic is that we are now spending time with our loved ones. The time together is something that should never be taken for granted.

And so, as with The Wheel of Fortune tarot card, life is always in flux. Though the pandemic may have us feeling as if the Wheel is at the lowest point, know that it is on the rise once more and things will get better for us all. Blessed Be.
Soul Travelerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11383146884931121418noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2064679394217469834.post-36296790955785094452018-08-03T11:16:00.000-07:002018-08-03T11:16:43.852-07:00Happy Lammas!

It's been a while since my last post due to a huge growth in my Toadwerks sales. I have some new product ideas I am hoping to harvest very soon. In the meantime, I celebrated the first harvest my harvesting a giant cucumber from my garden and making some refrigerator pickles from half of it. The rest of it will be put in the salad tonight. I love the lids I found from the Pioneer Woman's line of kitchen goods. I'm planning to use them for my buttons as well.
A salad made with our own tomatoes and lettuce will be nice. This year's harvest has not been very abundant but it as been tasty. I grow the lettuce hydroponically so I can have it all summer long. A batch of lettuce grows in around 2 to 3 weeks which is great and a lot easier than a dirt garden!
What plans are you going to harvest this season? Something to think about......
Busy much? Yes! I have been meaning to sit down and update this blog and here it is NOVEMBER! I honestly do not know where the time goes these days. The good news is that I have been busy streamlining my products in the shop giving customers more personalized choices! The bad news is that it's working and I am busy sewing! LOL
Having my husband here in town on a job also makes life a bit more hectic since he looks to me to provide dinner at least a few times a week! The crock pot has once again become my good friend. Not only can I fix it and forget it, and get two meals out of it as well. With Fall upon us now I am really enjoying making the seasonal foods that we enjoy. Tonight I made an apple pie and last week it was a pumpkin pie. I started out the season making a few Apple Crisps which are my favorites. I use a recipe from a very old edition of the Fanny Farmer cookbook. The recipe I use is called Apple Candy and it is really yummy and simple using only flour, butter, sugar and cinnamon.

Our gardens have been harvested with mixed results. As always my pumpkins and ornamental corn did great. This year we tried carrots and got quite a few in purple, white and orange! We also got some beets but they were teeny tiny. We did not get as many tomatoes as we have in the past thanks to some hungry squirrels in our yard!

I love to grow the mini pumpkins to use to decorate my mantle and also to use for any fall rituals. The best part is that they last throughout the season as does my corn. This year I took my corn and placed them in a bowl with a set of tiny fairy lights inside the bowl. It was a nice effect! Since Fall and Winter are my favorite times of the year, I like to really savor all of the flavors, sounds and aromas of these seasons. My wish for you this Fall is that you too are able to slow down just a bit and smell the cinnamon and the leaves and all of the goodies baking in your oven!
During the long days of summer, many people like to travel to the beach to relax and unwind. To me there is nothing more entrancing than watching the tide continually rolling in while listening to the sounds of the sea gulls and the crashing waves. I found this fun little love spell that one could do when they are down at the beach. As our 40th wedding anniversary fast approaches, I was thinking how this spell could be modified to use as a renewal of love. Enjoy!

Things over at my Etsy shop have been busy indeed! With the new year, came the introduction of more "design your own" items to give customers a chance to add their personal touch.

Customers can now choose the color they would like for their Zodiac symbol on their tarot cloth. This customer chose pink!

I added three new pagan symbol designs on tarot cloths with some custom choices. Pentagram, Awen and Hammer of Thor are available

Customers can now choose between a Pentagram, the Awen or Thor's Hammer and create their own custom color pagan patches.

2017 has finally arrived! With it comes the promise of wonderful days ahead since with this year we begin a new nine year cycle in the world of numerology. To add to the fun, we are just now out of the mercury retrograde and all planets are moving forward!
The store was quite busy throughout the holidays leaving me with no time to blog in between all of the extra holiday activities like cookie baking, holiday cooking and of course decorating the house and tree and wrapping gifts. This year I came up with the brilliant (and yes, lazy) idea of wrapping the boxes that came in through the mail of the the things I ordered. The heavier boxes served to keep the tree skirt in place from frisky cats looking to explore.
For Yule gifts this year I made my friends some body scrub using salt, coconut oil, peppermint and some dried mint from this summer's garden. I topped each jar off with a festive cotton top that was peppermint material.http://willowandsage.com/. It is my favorite magazine for finding some terrific ideas and recipes. I like the recipes I find because they are quite simple and easy to do, plus the magazine is a visual feast.

I got the recipe from the magazine "Willow and Sage".
I put away the Yule decorations leaving out my snowmen and deer. I redid the mantle over the fireplace and added some deer to the other forest creatures on the mantle. I added some lace snowflakes which I made on my embroidery machine. They look nice scattered along the garland. I love setting the house up in it's winter decor. The decorations add a feeling of coziness and warmth to the house. We do keep our Yule tree up through January because I like the look of the yule tree. It is decorated with owls, birds, foxes, pine cones and snow flakes. Wishing you all the joys of Winter!

I'm getting the feeling that Samhain is a much busier holiday for me than Yule, the reason being that I am having way too much fun making things! Case in point are the Samhain theme machine embroidered lace bookmarks (pictured above) I made to give as gifts at my annual Witches Tea. I also put a set of three into the shop as well!
I have a friend who's birthday is on Halloween, a holiday which he really loves. This year I decided to make him a rag quilt that he could throw on his sofa for the season. I like designing rag quilts because I think of them as shabby chic, which appeals to a lot of people who would not normally like the country feel of most quilts. This quit is also an easy and fun thing to make! I designed his quilt using a combination of solid and printed squares in order to make it a bit more masculine. I used gray and black as my color themes and was very pleased with the result. So pleased in fact, that I almost didn't want to give it up! I was able to give it to him last week at our Halloween cocktail party so he could enjoy it for the rest of this month. My cat Gypsy enjoyed the quilt while I was trying to take a picture of it. The second picture is the back side of the quilt. If you are interested in making a rag quilt of your own, there are some nice tutorials and ideas at www.favequilts.com that you might enjoy. Happy crafting!
The excitement of the coming of Fall starts with Lammas for me. As we start and celebrate the first harvest, I am already anticipating what lies ahead.

October is my favorite month of the year. Although Fall arrives on September 23rd, here in Colorado we see Fall in all of its splendor in the early days of October. We took a ride out to the high country a few weeks ago and took in some of the beautiful scenery in Guenella Pass. I was inspired by the sights and smells of Fall as we hiked and drove through this beautiful area! I couldn't wait to get home and sew and knit Fall things. Although I seek out the beauty in all seasons, it is the dark side of the year that awakens my soul which in turn, fires up my creativity. I want each day to go by as slowly as possible so I can savor each minute.
We tried some new vegetables and are still waiting to see how things will turn out for some. We had great success with green beans, tomatoes and lettuce. In our back yard we have a beautiful white crab apple tree that has given us one of the largest amount of fruit we have seen in years despite a late snow this past spring. I was excited about being able to make my crab apple butter, but decided I needed help this year in learning how to can it since we had a bumper crop. My kitchen maven friend and fellow blogger Pink at That Crafty Bitch (see my blog favs on the right) instructed me in the fine art of canning which, as it turns out, is not as complicated as I thought it might be. It was just a whole lot of fun! Here are the highlights in pictures from concept to finish
For the first harvest of the season, this is our harvest of squash from our garden, along with a corn salad accented with our garden herbs of thyme, lemon thyme oregano and basil. The bread is a rich corn bread I make from a recipe I got from the Baldpate Inn, here in Estes Park Colorado. The corn cloth is one of the tarot cloths from my Etsy shop! Lammas blessings to all!
After having two snowstorms in late April and early May, we finally got some Spring! We have three large Lilac bushes in our back yard and they are finally in full bloom. I sat outside the other day to read and take in the glorious scent of Lilac.Living in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains means a very late start to Spring planting season. We won't be able to plant any warm weather crops until the end of May.
We planted brussel sprouts and beets today and checked on our lettuce which is already in progress.
A good day indeed considering it was 45 degrees!
We also planted three new bushes outside the front of the house. Our Vinca is spreading and blooming over the rocks in the front of the house, looking as beautiful as ever. I decided to join in the spirit of it all and add a bit of purple to my hair as well. I am happy with the results!
I celebrated Ostara by doing a ritual for a very small group of friends. I called it a Crafting ritual. During our Ostara ritual we all sat around and colored an Ostara illustration while listening to Vivaldi's Spring from the four seasons. Later, to wrap up our ritual we all got started on the process of regenerating a plant of our own to help us with our ritual intentions of regenerating something in our lives. The plant I used is called a Resurrection Plant.
It is in the family of air plants, and as such is easy to care for and really fun to watch it come to life within an hour of adding water! I was pretty thrilled to see that when my plant opened fully it looks like the Green Man! After our ritual, we all enjoyed a piece of Honey Cake that I made using the recipe from "Ostara" which is one of Llewellyn's Sabbat Essentials series of books. I love these little books! They are small in size but each of them are packed with holiday history and lore plus recipes and other fun holiday ideas. I decided to collect and use them as each of the holidays approach.
I added some Ostara inspired items to the store! I like to craft seasonally in order to really embrace the present. I added some herb bags in anticipation of growing season. They also make wonderful little charm bags that can be used as gifts or for yourself! They have their own section in the store so they can easily be found!
I always love January! A new year bringing with it countless new opportunities. I also love the frosty days, especially the ones that include snow! I enjoy drinking my tea from my red and white nordic mug while sitting in my chair with one of the cats nearby, "helping me knit". The deer are everywhere here in the neighborhood looking for some goodies. A definite inspiration for my Stag tarot cloth! Everywhere I look I see magic and enchantment.
I started my work year with a custom order for some snowflake handkerchiefs and was inspired to make some for the store as well. A handkerchief is just the thing for those cold outdoor moon rituals, not to mention the upcoming Imbolc! For my ritual, I think I would like to use the colors in this Celtic snowflake handkerchief.
